Marco and Stefano Bonfanti have performed regularly as a duo since the very beginning of their artistic careers, receiving widespread acclaim from audiences, specialized critics, and leading figures in the musical world.

Since 1990, the duo has performed concerts for major musical institutions in Italy and abroad (Spain, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, Poland, Slovenia, Serbia, etc.), appearing at the most prestigious international festivals and concert halls.

They have achieved numerous successes in national and international competitions, including the 4th Certament International de Guitarra “Vila de L’Olleria” (Spain), the “Mauro Giuliani” Competition in Bari, the “Ebe Cazzaniga Ansalone” Competition in Abbiategrasso, the international competitions in Isernia, Savona and Gorizia, the “Rospigliosi” Competition in Pistoia, the competitions in Voghera and Castelfidardo, as well as the First Absolute Prize at the competition organized by the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe.

Their musical training initially took place under the guidance of Massimo Laura at the “Giuseppe Verdi” Conservatory of Como, where they graduated. They subsequently attended the three-year Soloist Course at the Musikhochschule in Lugano, where they both obtained the prestigious “Solistendiplom”. They also furthered their studies with distinguished concert guitarists such as Oscar Ghiglia, Alberto Ponce, Eduardo Fernandez, and Carlo Marchione.

A fundamental part of the duo’s artistic development was their encounter with Paolo Pegoraro and Stefano Viola at the Accademia Tarrega in Pordenone, where Marco and Stefano continued their advanced studies for several years. Equally significant was their meeting with Pavel Steidl, who encouraged them to deepen their study of 19th-century repertoire, which they regularly perform in concert on period instruments.

They have performed with various chamber ensembles and have collaborated, including as soloists, with prestigious orchestras such as the Orchestra della Radio Svizzera Italiana (broadcast live on RSI), the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala di Milano (including under the direction of Riccardo Muti), the Orchestra Sinfonica del Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Orchestra del CSI di Lugano, Camerata dei Laghi, Ensemble 440, Le Cameriste Ambrosiane, Cameristi di Como, Orchestra Alchimia, and others.

In addition to radio recordings, they recorded the CD “¡Ottocento!” for the MAP record label, which received enthusiastic reviews from the specialized press. The magazine Chitarra Classica described them as:

“… an established presence on the international concert scene.”

They have recently completed the recording of two CDs featuring music by G. Albini and G. Manzi, as well as the CD “Recital”, recorded together with violinist Davide Alogna (Phoenix Classics). Considerable success was also achieved by the CD released by Brilliant Classics, featuring the Concerto for Two Guitars, Violin and Strings by G. Albini, which Marco and Stefano recorded with Le Cameriste Ambrosiane.

They have also recorded two CDs featuring music by G. Mirto and S. F. Lavia for Sinfonica, a live DVD for the Ateneo della Chitarra di Milano, and a CD for Guitart Label featuring music by R. Iervolino.

Throughout their career, they have inspired numerous composers—including U. Bombardelli, G. Drozd, G. Spriano, M. Reghezza, G. Manzi, G. Albini, S. Gianzini, N. Jappelli, and others—to write works for the duo, thereby contributing to the enrichment of the repertoire for two guitars. VP Music Media Editions in Florence has dedicated a collection to the duo entitled “Duo Bonfanti Guitar Collection.”

They have given the world premieres of more than thirty compositions for and with guitar.

Alongside their concert career, they maintain an intensive teaching activity at the Puccini Conservatory in Gallarate, the Appiani Musical Foundation in Monza, and the M. Giuliani School of Advanced Musical Studies in Seveso, as well as conducting numerous masterclasses throughout Italy and abroad.

Cominciamo dalla fine. Immaginate un'unica chitarra con un doppio chitarrista: due teste sovrapposte, due mani sinistre sulla tastiera, due mani destre sulle corde, impegnate in un'elegante e allegra Gagliarda del grande John Dowland. Era l’applauditissimo bis di fine concerto sabato scorso al Casino Sociale, primo evento dell’ottavo Festival Chitarristico “Città di Voghera”.Lo credereste? Già prima di questa gradevole sorpresa - che ha finito con l'entusiasmare un pubblico già conquistato - avevamo l'intenzione di presentare i fratelli Marco e Stefano Bonfanti come un unico chitarrista a due teste e quattro mani, tanto perfetta ci  appariva l'intesa tra i due strumenti e i due strumentisti. Veniva da pensare a certi linguaggi elaborati da alcune coppie di gemelli, comprensibili solo a loro, croce e delizia degli studiosi di linguistica.

Marco e Stefano Bonfanti, in realtà sono fratelli, non gemelli. Ma anche con due sedie e due chitarre separate c'è da scommettere che perfino i rispettivi ritmi cardiaci marciano all'unisono. Armonia interpretativa, tecnica tanto sopraffina da farsi dimenticare, passione tanto più commovente (e coinvolgente) quanto più seria e composta, senz'ombra di ostentazione. Vestiti severamente di scuro, impegnati anima, cuore, testa e  mani a servizio della musica, sembrava che celebrassero un rito"
